Piper Alpha disaser
I was not feeling good when I got up this morning, maybe it was because I was late going to bed, as I stayed up to watch the documentary on the Piper Alpha disaster which happened in 1988. I remember hearing about it, I think I was home on holiday from college. I took notice of the news as I knew someone who worked on there, Adrian, he was a local lad. He was one of the men who lost their life in the disaster. I knew he had died there but there was no body, no funeral, well I don't remember one anyway. My way of dealing with the bad news was to think that he was asleep when it happened but from watching the program last night, he could not have been asleep so my illusion was shattered. I guess the only consolation I can take from the situation is that he did not die along.
I remember him and his friend going up to Aberdeen to find work, they had planned it for weeks. The other one Kevin, came home not sure if he had got a job and did not like it or was not able to find job.
I looked this morning for the list of the dead men from the disaster and Adrian's name was there of course, apparently his job title was roughneck, a labourer of some sort I think. My brother works on the oil rigs too, its where people can earn good money, the jobs round here are piss poor for pay that's if you can find one in the first place.
I also saw a program last night on a woman who lives here in the village who chose farming as a career, which was and probably still is a male environment, I saw a lot of the old characters from the village who are now dead and ones who don't live here anymore and ones who are a lot older now. Maybe I should do more things than just watch telly, life is too short and all that.
My toaster broke yesterday so I got a new one today, from Tesco, it seems ok, also I got some things for my trainers to stop them stinking. When I came home, out of curiosity I looked on the internet fo a way to remove the stink from shoes and apparently all I needed was a bit of baking soda, which was cheaper than the brand odour eaters anyway, oh well, I will use the baking soda when the insole things stop working which of course they will as they will want you to buy more and more of them. I don't recall my trainers stinking like that before, well maybe one pair, its a real horrible smell.
